It may rain and show february snow outside, but soon, very soon the signs of spring will charge us with warm energy and festive mood – martenitsas, snowdrops, storks…
Since 2017, the The Martenitsa is included in the representative list of the Intangible Cultural heritage of mankind. Nomination is a group of Bulgaria, Northern Macedonia, Republic of Moldova and Romania. It is described as cultural practices related to 1 March and preserving the traditions of celebrating the beginning of spring.
The beliefs that wearing red and white thread on March 1st will ensure safe and harmonious passage from winter to spring is typical for the four states. It is noted that the celebration of spring in the relevant communities contributes to social cohesion, intergenerational exchange and creativity.
